Condoriri is an aymara word which means "condor head". Condoriri is a beautiful and popular peak north of La Paz, Bolivia. It is a massif consisting of three peaks, suggestive of the head and two wings of a condor (hence the name).

The area was first explored by europeans when the English mountaineer William Martin Conway visited it at the end of the nineteenth century. Conway later said, that while night fell, clouds of condors would pass flying above their heads.

ITINERARY

Day 1
From La Paz we drive 2 hours up to Tuni lagoon and we walk 3 hours to reach up the banks of Jurikota lake near the glaciers of Condoriri. Camp at 4670 m high.

Day 2
Ascent to a frozen lake below Condoriri, scramble to the valley above and reach the Apacheta Pass (5150 m high) after 3-4 hours. Spectacular views of the Condoriri peaks, Cordillera Real, Altiplano and Lake Titicaca. Camp beside Chiarkhota Lake at 4650 metres. 6-7 hours trekking.

Day 3
We climb up the Aguja Negra pass (5035 metres). After descending (1 hour) we climb up to the next pass Zongo Sistana (4930 metres). Excellent views of peaks such as Huayna Potosi. Finally we walk down into the green Liviñosa valley and trek out easily to Botijlaca village which is on the road. A car picks us up to near the base of Huayna Potosi mountain for camping. We are surrounded by huge glaciers that cover the uncountable high peaks nearby.

Day 4
2 hours hiking to visit the south east glacier of Huayna Potosi at 4900 m high. Return to La Paz.

EXPEDITION LOGISTICS

In trekking we consider as well those 6 difficulties explained above but we transferred the situation to the activity of the trek. The only remarkable difference exists in the altitude: The true climbing activity starts at over 5000 m high but the trekking activity runs from 1500 m high up to 5150 m high.
